Neon Glitter Santa and Reindeer, or Always Test Colorfastness First

I was cleaning out my craft cabinet the other day and discovered eight unfinished wooden reindeer cutouts and a Santa. I didn’t have red and green paint, so I decided to decorate them with neon and glitter paint pens from a previous project.

I painted the wooden cutouts gray and sprayed them with mod podge sealer. Once they were dry, I drew on them with paint pens, then sprayed them again with the sealer. Unfortunately, the liquid sealer made the glittery paint pens run, something I didn’t even think to check beforehand.

Clicking on the pictures below will expand them for closer look at the post-sealer reindeer.

I didn’t take any pictures before the glitter paint pens ran, but I think they turned out okay anyway! It’s more of a tie-dye look, and I’m interested in using that effect intentionally on future projects.

I thought about making them into a wreath, but this year I displayed them as a banner, as shown on the packaging. The fronts were too heavy and the deer kept trying to flip upside-down, so I hooked their front legs over the twine and also used some painters tape to hold them flat against the wall. Next year they might become a wreath, or even separate ornaments!
